As to how healthcare standards became so unwieldy, a long-time friend and colleague and former national HIT consultant, has an expression for all occasions. For this one it is "perfect is the enemy of good". For years the goal was to perfectly replicate healthcare with all its complexity and uncertainty through standards. HL7 RIM is the ultimate manifestation of this approach. It was also the case that healthcare was insular with its approach to standards and was very late to adopting approaches used everywhere else.<br /><br />Thankfully, due to some heroes I've posted about earlier, all of this is changing -- rapidly.
